But it needs to be used under the authorisation of trade certificate granted by the registering authority.

Meghalaya Vahan Tax Applicability (MVTA)

As per the MVMT act, if a person has transferred the ownership or having the control on the following vehicle has to pay the tax:

  • Motor cycle
  • Jeeps
  • Maxi cabs
  • Motor cars
  • Omnibuses (Not exceeding 2286 kg unladen weight) used personally or kept personally
  • Private service vehicles

Calculate Road Tax

The road tax in Meghalaya is calculated on the age of a vehicle, fuel type, length and width, engine capacity, the place of manufacture and so on. Other than this, seating capacity and the number of wheels are also considered. The transport department imposes a road tax, which is equivalent to a percentage of the original cost of the vehicle.

Tax on Two-Wheeler in Meghalaya

The road tax for two-wheeler is based on the age of the vehicle and engine capacity.

The vehicle tax in Meghalaya are as follows:

Personalised Four-Wheelers Road Tax

This is calculated on the Basis of engine capacity and age of the vehicle.

The tax rates for personalised four-wheelers are as follows:

Vehicle Onetime Tax till 15 years Tax per 5 years after 10 years
Cost below Rs. 3 lakh 2% of the original cost of the vehicle Rs.3000
Cost above Rs. 3 lakh 2.5 % of the original cost of the vehicle Rs.4500
Cost above Rs. 15 lakh 4.5% of the original cost of the vehicle Rs.6750
Cost above Rs. 20 lakh 6.5% of the original cost of the vehicle Rs.8250

Road Tax Exemption

People who are exempt from vehicle tax are as follows:

  • Vehicles that are used for agricultural purpose are exempted from the Vahan tax in Meghalaya
  • Vehicles owned by a disabled person are eligible for exemption from the tax

Penalty for Paying Late Tax

If the road tax is not paid at the given time, the vehicle owner is liable to pay the penalty, which may be double to the actual Tax Rate.

Online Payment of Vehicle Tax in Meghalaya

To pay road tax online follow these steps:

  • Visit www(dot)megtransport(dot)gov(dot)in
  • On the left-hand side, click on Online Service Option, then click on Vahan services
  • You will be redirected to the Vahan Citizen Service Portal
  • On the new page, fill the valid details and click on Proceed
  • Now, click on Pay your Tax from the drop-down Online Services menu
  • Add your mobile number and you will receive an OTP
  • After entering OTP, click on Show Details
  • Now, select the tax mode from the drop-down list and provide details and click on Payment
  • A confirmation box will appear, confirm and proceed further to make payment
  • You will be redirected to the SBI payment gateway, select your Bank and select the Continue option
  • Once the payment is successful, you will receive a payment Receipt. Take a printout and save it for future reference
