Tripura, one of the famous states in the northeast of India, has a wide Range of connectivity and highways, and in order to maintain good road and infrastructure, road tax is collected by the state government.

Road tax in Tripura

It is applicable to every vehicle, and one must pay the tax at the time of purchase.

Calculation of Road Tax

The road tax is applied by the state government as well as the central government. In Tripura, the tax is determined on various factors, which includes the engine capacity, seating capacity, weight and the cost of the vehicle. Taxation also depends on the category of the vehicle such as van, car, truck, two-wheeler, etc.

While purchasing a vehicle, the tax applied is on the rates of 2%, 3%, 10% and 12.5% based on the category of the vehicle. Taxation is either for one-time in 15 years or annually depending on the type of your vehicle.

Vahan Tax on Two-Wheelers

The road tax for two-wheelers is calculated on the cost of the vehicle. Following are the tax rates for two-wheelers:

Two-wheeler without gear Rs. 1,000 for 15 years, and Rs. 500 for every 5 years
Two-wheeler costing below Rs. 1,00,000 Rs. 2,000 for 15 years, and Rs. 1,000 for every 5 years.
Two-wheelers costing above Rs. 1,00,000 Rs 2,650 for 15 years, and Rs. 1,100 for every 5 years

Road Tax on Four-Wheelers

Similar to two-wheelers, the tax rates for four-wheelers is calculated on the cost of the vehicle.

The road tax for four-wheeler are as follows:

Four-Wheeler One-Time Tax
Four-wheelers costing below Rs. 3,00,000 Rs. 4,100 for 15 years, and Rs. 2,050 for every 5 years
Four-wheelers costing between Rs. 3,00,000 and Rs. 5,00,000 Rs. 4,800 for 15 years, and Rs. 2,400 for every 5 years
Four-wheelers costing between Rs. 5,00,000 and Rs. 10,00,000 Rs. 6,900 for 15 years, and Rs. 3,450 for every 5 years
Four-wheelers costing between Rs. 10,00,000 and Rs. 15,00,000 Rs. 7,550 for 15 years and Rs. 3,775 for every 5 years
Four-wheelers costing more than Rs 15,00,000 Rs. 8.250 for 15 years and then Rs. 4,125 for every 5 years

Taxation on Other Vehicles

Other vehicles include vehicles other than two-wheelers and cars, such as auto, etc.

Vehicle weighing below 3,000 kg Rs. 600 per year
Vehicle weighing between 3,000 kg and 5,560 kg Rs. 900 per year
Vehicle weighing between 5,560 kg and 7,500 Rs. 1,620 per year
Vehicle weighing between 7,500 kg and 12,000 kg Rs. 2,625 per year
Vehicle weighing between 12,000 kg and 16,200 kg Rs. 5,250 per year
Vehicle weighing more than 16,200 kg Rs. 6,560 per year and Rs. 25 for every addition of 100 kg

Tax Refund in Tripura

The amount paid for the road tax can be claimed if a vehicle is utilized for less than 15 years and is scrapped or discarded. You can claim the road tax once the cancellation is done in the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

In case, you are transferred and registered in another state after the initial registration, then the refund can be claimed from the initial place of registration.

How to Pay Road Tax in Tripura?

Payment of the road tax can be done during the registration process of the vehicle. You can pay tax on a yearly Basis or a one-time tax depending upon your choice of preference. If not paid at the time of registration, owners of the vehicle can head to the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

In the RTO, you need to fill up the respected form and pay the tax. After the payment, you will receive a Receipt, keep the receipt safe for the future references.

Online Payment

Following are the steps to paying Tripura RTO tax online.

  • Visit the official website of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, also known as Parivahan portal
  • Select “Online Services” on the Home Page and click on “Vehicle Related Services”
  • Choose “Tripura” from the drop-down menu
  • On the next page, enter your vehicle registration number to log in and initiate payment
  • Make the payment on the designated page using internet banking or payment cards
