Documents Required for PAN Card - Issuing, Re-issuing & Correction

A PAN Card serves as identity proof for Indians. Whether you are a foreigner settled in India or an Indian citizen with an annual turnover of INR 5,00,000 or above, it is mandatory to have a PAN card for Income Tax Return purposes. Plus, it is useful for investments.

Like other identity verification documents, Indians are supposed to arrange a set of required documents when applying for a PAN card. Similarly, you may need to submit these documents when re-issuing or making corrections to the existing PAN card.

Documents Required for PAN Card

The government needs documents that confirm your identity proof, date of birth, and address proof. Depending on your current residential status, you need to file either Form 49A or Form 49AA (for foreigners) along with the required documents for the re-issuance, issuance of a fresh card, or changes in the PAN card. Documents could vary depending on your entity type. For example, an individual may need a set of different documents for a PAN card than the organization or trust.

PAN Card Documents Required

Let’s take a look at the documents that are accepted as identity proof for PAN card:

  • Voter ID card (if you are 18+)

  • Passport
  • Driving license (for 18+ applicants)
  • Arm’s license
  • A certificate issued by the recognized Bank, featuring the photograph of the candidate along with their bank account number
  • Pension card, featuring the candidate’s photo
  • Any identity card issued by the central government or your state government that’s considered valid for identity verification

A copy of the identity verification document is to be uploaded online if you are registering through the NSDL portal website or you must hand the verification document to the executive at the nearest NSDL center.

Documents Required for Minor Pan Card

A PAN card is issued to people of all ages, backgrounds, and residential statuses. It is one of the few identity verification documents that a minor can apply for. If the age of the applicant is below 18, the identity verification documents of the parents or their legal guardians can be used for the PAN card application.

Proof of Address

The individual or organization applying for a PAN card must submit the documents that act as valid proof of their address to the authorities. Here are the documents required for change of address in PAN card or new issuance.

  • Voter ID with your photo
  • Credit/Debit Card statement (at least 3 months old)
  • Aadhaar card
  • Copy of your utility bills (at least 3 months old)
  • Bank Account Statement or credit card statement
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Indian government
  • A copy of your property registration
  • Driving license
  • Accommodation letter issued by the government
  • Passport

Any other valid document with your address mentioned in it can be used for the address proof.

Date of Birth

  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • A copy of the birth certificate issued by the authorized faculty.
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Marriage certificate
  • An affidavit containing your date of birth
  • Pension card
  • Domicile certificate

Other documents issued by the central or state government, featuring your date of birth information are considered valid for the PAN card application.

PAN Card Application for HUF

HUF stands for the hindu undivided family. The PAN card application for HUF and NRIs vary slightly from the normal application. Applicants who fall into the HUF and NRI categories need to submit the identity of proof and address. In the case of HUF, the Karta or the head of the family has to submit the identity verification and address proof containing the name, father’s name, and other members of the family. The documents must be in the name of the head.

They can use PIO and OCI cards issued by the Indian government for identity and address verification requirements.

PAN Card Correction Required Documents

Depending on the correction you need, you may have to submit the above documents along with a set of additional documents to get your name, address, and other details changed in the PAN card. Here are the steps for corrections in PAN card:

  1. Visit the website of NSDL online
  2. Select the “change or correction in PAN” option
  3. Select your status (whether an individual or organization)
  4. Update your name, email, number, birth date, and address
  5. Complete the Captcha and submit the documents
  6. You will find the list of the documents required for the requested changes on the NSDL e-governance websites. Check out the list and update the documents as required
  7. Complete the payment to get the acknowledgment slip
  8. Sign the slip and attach your photo
  9. Send it to the NSDL mailing address

Required Documents for Pan Card Application for Companies

Note that the Indian government has made it mandatory for companies and all entities generating Income to have a PAN card. Basically, it is a tax identity for a business. Not applying for a PAN card for your business can get your company into trouble, as it is considered withholding of your income and tax information from the government. So, every company - whether it is a limited liability partnership or a trust, needs to apply for a PAN card online at the NSDL e-governance portal.

The application process for PAN cards for companies is slightly different from that for individuals. The certificate of registration is the only additional document a company requires to submit to the NSDL center, in addition to the documents mentioned above. If you are running a partnership firm, then a partnership Deed is required for a PAN card.
