Are looking to invest money between 4 to 7 years, but don’t want market Volatility to affect your investment? Then here’s a fund that you need to look at. Medium to Long Duration Funds is a type of debt funds that have a Macaulay duration of between 4 to 7 years. So, if you want to earn optimal returns out of your wealth over the mid to long run, then medium to long duration funds can be an ideal fund for you.
Medium to Long Duration Funds invests in the debt and money market instruments that have an average maturity of between 4 to 7 years (Macaulay duration). These funds may provide better returns, but can be more sensitive to interest rate changes. When the interest rate rises the bond price falls and vice-versa. As such debt funds are exposed to interest rate fluctuations, it disturbs the prices of the underlying Bonds in the fund Portfolio.

Investors who want to invest in medium to long duration funds should be able to tolerate some level of risk, as such debt funds are not completely risk-free. Debt funds have a choice of various maturity schemes ranging from low duration, short duration, medium duration, medium-to-long duration and long duration funds. To make the best out of their investments in debt funds, investors need to decide investment based on their maturity period. Like said, if you are looking at the time frame of one-year Investment plan, then, a short duration debt fund can ideally suit.
Tax implication on debt funds is computed in the following manner-
If the holding period of a debt investment is less than 36 months, then it is classified as a short-term investment and these are taxed as per individual's tax slab.
If the holding period of debt investment is more than 36 months, then it is classified as a long-term investment and is taxed at 20% with an indexation benefit.
| Capital Gains | Investment Holding Gains | Taxation |
|---|---|---|
| Short Term Capital Gains | Less than 36 months | As per individual's tax slab |
| Long Term Capital Gains | More than 36 months | 20% with indexation benefits |
