When planning to invest in Mutual Funds, an investor should know the basic aspects of it. There are various attributes of Mutual Funds, such as investment options like growth & dividend, risk profile, investment philosophy, investment mode, etc. Apart from these, Mutual Funds are differentiated on the basis of their structure, i.e., — open-ended and closed-ended.
So, let’s know how they both differ from each other, following with some of the best open-ended Equity Mutual Funds to invest in 2026.
Open-ended schemes purchase and offer units on a daily basis, and therefore it allows investors to enter & exit as per their convenience. In open-ended schemes, the shares are bought and sold on demand of their NAV (Net Asset Value). NAV is the value of the fund’s underlying securities and it is generally calculated at the close of every trading day.
Here, new units are created and issued if there is a demand as compared to the supply, and old units are eliminated if there is a redemption pressure. However, there is no fixed date on which the units would be permanently terminated or redeemed.
The units can be obtained and sold even after the NFO that’s New Fund Offer period. The units are purchased & sold at the NAV pronounced by the store.
When an investor purchases shares in a Mutual Fund, more shares are created. And when an investor sells the shares, the shares are taken out of the circulation. If a large amount of shares are redeemed, the fund may have to sell some of its investments in order to pay the investors. In India, the majority of Mutual Funds are open-ended in nature.

A closed-ended scheme functions much more like an ETF/ Exchange Traded Fund than a Mutual Fund. In order to raise money and then trade in the open market, closed-ended are launched through an IPO. The shares issued by this fund are limited and their value is estimated on the basis of the net asset value. However, the actual price of the fund in a closed-ended scheme is determined by the supply and demand. And therefore, the price of the trading always differs as per the real market value.
In a closed-ended scheme investors cannot exit via redemption. The redemption takes place once the period matures. Moreover, to provide an opportunity to exit, AMCs list the closed-ended schemes on the stock exchange. Hence, investors would need to trade these funds on the exchange to exit or redeem them before the maturity period.
