How to Invest in Mutual Funds During Coronavirus Lockdown in India?

Updated on April 26, 2025 , 7302 views

Corona Virus is becoming a major concern for every nation across the globe. India is on lockdown till April 15, 2020. India joined the bandwagon on the midnight of 24th March 2020 following PM Narendra Modi’s speech.

The Market has experienced the fastest fall in history and stocks have become extremely cheap in the market. Everything except essential services will remain open during this time. Mutual fund offices are also operating with minimum staff at this time. However, they are trying and doing their best to keep the services running smoothly and efficiently.

How to Invest in Mutual Funds During Coronavirus Lockdown

According to a report, the Association of Mutual Funds in India informed SEBI the difficulties that are likely to take place in the daily operation of mutual funds. However, the authorities have been doing a great job to maintain market stability as much as possible.

Investors should invest cautiously and smartly at this crucial phase. Make use of staggered investments like Systematic Investment plan (SIP) and Systematic Transfer Plan (STPs). SIPs is recommended since it allows the investor to be disciplined and build long-term wealth. STP is recommended in volatile market conditions.

Investors who Invested through Paper and Cheque?

If you have invested via paper and cheque route you can still carry on transactions to your fund folios using the online mode. Here are a few steps to follow:

  • Go to the AMCsofficial website online or app on your smartphone
  • Register yourself with PAN number, email id and mobile number that’s linked with your fund folio
  • You will receive an OTP on your registered email id and phone number
  • Use it to verify your identity on your online account and redeem your investments. You can now sell, switch or even purchase new units

Authorities Urge Investors To Go Online

The report also stated that there could be a delay in publishing Net Asset Value (NAV). However, authorities have stated that as long as telecom networks are fully functional they don’t see any issues in servicing investors’ requirements. Investors can use the website and mobile applications for transactions. Some AMCs have also passed an addendum to enable investors to email their transactions to them. They will have it processed provided the investors have a registered email id.

Mutual Fund company employees will be working from home to allow the smooth functioning of transactions through online modes.

In an advertisement issued in the public interest, AMFI said that Mutual funds will be keeping their collection centres/branch offices closed from March 23, 2020, and allow purely online transactions through various electronic modes like mutual fund websites, web portals, digital platforms, apps or virtual channels, etc., until the situation comes under control and social distancing is withdrawn by the authorities. This to ensure safety through social distancing for investors, distributors, visitors, employees of mutual funds.

2. Invest in SIPs

SIP is the ideal way to invest in mutual funds. Many AMCsoffer the privilege of video KYC. In this way, you can start investing without having to visit the Bank. Upload PAN Card photograph, Aadhar card copy and fill the necessary requirements.

Some great news from the Market

1. L&T launches two new mutual funds

Larsen & Turbo (L&T) Mutual Fund launched two new mutual funds called Nifty50 and NiftyNext50 Index Funds on 24th March 2020. This was done after testing the remote access of various functions of mutual funds over the past few weeks after the Coronavirus-led disruption into eh daily operations of the stock market. They took this action despite most of their employees working from home.

2. Consumption Industry to remain unaffected

As per the experts, the consumption industry will not be affected by the lockdown as consumers will continue to purchase goods and services for consumption. Many are also hoarding goods for meeting their daily needs. This will help the industry stay stable during the lockdown.
