In 2002, the Parliament passed an Act that paved way for bifurcation of UTI into Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India (SUUTI) and UTI Mutual Fund (UTIMF). UTI Mutual Fund thus became a SEBI registered Mutual Fund in February 2003, from the erstwhile UTI. The fund house as mentioned above is sponsored by four Indian nationalized institutions that include SBI, PNB, BoB, and LIC. Each of these sponsors hold 18.29% stake in the paid up capital of UTI AMC. The remaining 26% stake is owned by T Rowe Price International Limited a subsidiary of T Rowe Price Group Inc.
The mission of UTI is, to be the most preferred Mutual Fund. UTI MF has assets under management across various businesses that include domestic Mutual Fund, international business, and Alternative Investment Funds. After SEBI's (Securities and Exchange Board of India) circulation on re-categorisation and rationalisation of open-ended mutual funds, many Mutual Fund Houses are incorporating changes in their scheme names and categories. SEBI introduced new and broad categories in Mutual Funds in order to bring uniformity in similar schemes launched by the different Mutual Funds. This is to aim and ensure that investors can find it easier to compare the products and evaluate the different options available before investing in a scheme.
